Haye fight could still happen, says Klitschko camp

Is David Haye retiring? Or is the whole thing just an elaborate slideshow to get boxing fans’ attention?

DAVID HAYE HASN’T even officially retired yet, but people are already making plans for his comeback.

Bernd Boente, promoter for both Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, insisted yesterday that Londoner could be lured out of his proposed retirement for one last fight against either of the Ukrainian heavyweight champions.

Haye, who turns 31 tomorrow, is on record as saying that he would not fight beyond that birthday. Reports yesterday said that he would not be appplying to have his boxing licence renewed by the British Boxing Board of Control.

But speaking to Sky Sports News, Boente maintained that Haye would “definitely come back” if a fight against the Klitschkos was on the cards.

“David Haye’s manager Adam Booth always told me that he will officially retire on Thursday, I think his 31st birthday, but that he would definitely come back if there is a fight against Vitali or a rematch against Wladimir. So this option is still there.”

A fight against Vitali in Germany next February or March appears to be the main option under discussion by the two camps at present.

Haye was stripped of his WBA crown in a unanimous decision defeat by Wladimir in July and, Boente says, a rematch “makes no sense.”

A rematch with Wladimir makes no sense because there are no questions after the first fight and you can only promote a fight if there is a certain thrill.

But against Vitali it’s different. Vitali has a totally different style.
