SINCE TRAP’S BOYS booked their place in this summer’s European Championship finals in Poland and Ukraine, a cottage industry of unofficial anthems has developed.
We’ve had reworkings of Smokey classics, low-key ballads to our summer holidays and Dropkick Murphys tributes.
Then earlier tonight, this dropped into our inbox, I’ve left in the uppercase bits for you: “We are called “Breen, White & Gold”, and we burst into existance the second Ireland qualified for Euro 2012…
“We had just begun pondering how we could possibly get ourselves over to Poland/Ukraine for the championship, when all of a sudden…There was a great big bang! Sparks flew, and the ground beneath us shook as we heard the unmistakable voice of Gary Breen proclaim:-
“YOU ARE THE CHOSEN LADS! YOU MUST LEAD THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND IN SONG, AND WITH ONE VOICE YOU SHALL SING THE BOYS IN GREEN TO VICTORY!
“We said: ‘We’d love to do that Gary Breen, but how will we get ourselves over to Poland/Ukraine? We’ve no moneys!”
“MAKE THE SONG LADS, AND ALL THE REST WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF.”
