As it happened: Ireland dominate Japan 41-10 in November Test

Catch up on all the action as Ireland continued their Autumn International Series against Japan.

Hello all.

Welcome back to the continuation of Ireland’s Autumn International Series. We hope you’ve rinsed out the badness of last week’s disappointing result against New Zealand as Ireland get ready to go again today at the Aviva Stadium.

Japan are in town and Andy Farrell will be hoping to produce a big response in front of a home crowd. Eddie Jones’ side are also coming into this tie on the back of a loss to South Africa last weekend so it’s all nicely poised for the 12.40pm kick-off. Today’s game is live on RTÉ and TNT, and we’ll be bringing you through all the updates live from the Aviva.

As always, Murray Kinsella and Ciarán Kennedy will be providing in-depth coverage from the game too.

We’ll have the team line-ups for you in the next few moments along with any late team changes that may occur, so do stay with us.

Here’s how Ireland have been named to line out:

IRELAND: Jamie Osborne; Tommy O’Brien, Tom Farrell, Robbie Henshaw, Jacob Stockdale; Jack Crowley, Craig Casey; Andrew Porter, Rónan Kelleher, Thomas Clarkson; James Ryan, Tadhg Beirne; Ryan Baird, Nick Timoney, Caelan Doris (captain).

We’ve got TONNES of pre-match reading for you to get your teeth into

Both teams are well into their warm-ups. It’s a gorgeous day in Dublin. Not a touch a breeze and blue skies above. Great conditions for great rugby.

Hopefully!

Kick-Off! Ireland v Japan

1 min: Ireland 0-0 Japan

And the visitors get us underway as Ireland claim the kick-off and start the phase play.

1 min: Ireland 0-0 Japan

Caelan Doris took a big hit to test out the strength of that shoulder. A pass goes forward and Japan will put in for the scrum.

3 mins: Ireland 0-0 Japan

Japan still have possession as Nick Timoney gets stepped. But Ireland eventually win a penalty for coming in from the side. And Jack Crowley gets his first kick of the day.

Let’s see how the lineout is working today.

4 mins: Ireland 0-0 Japan

And it’s not good as the ball flies over the back. Those problems that affected Ireland in Chicago are coming up again.

5 mins: Ireland 0-0 Japan

Ireland keep the ball and are awarded a scrum after the ball goes forward. Tommy O’Brien attempts a grubber kick but the ball is blocked.

Ireland have a penalty advantage and the play comes back. Crowley is going for the posts.

6 mins: Ireland 3-0 Japan

And it’s straight and true. Ireland are off the mark at the Aviva Stadium.

7 mins: Ireland 3-0 Japan

Lovely swift passing after Ireland claim the restart.  The eventual box kick finds touch and now it’s Japan’s turn to set up for the lineout.

8 mins: Ireland 3-0 Japan

Another Ireland lineout after a grubber kick trickles out. This time they claim it through Ryan Baird and boot it into touch.

10 mins: Ireland 3-0 Japan

Japan enjoying a fair bit of the possession and are making gains through the phases. But a misplaced pass goes loose and Craig Casey pounces to win the ball back.

Crowley kicks it on.

12 mins: Ireland 3-0 Japan

Japan almost in there!

A lovely pass out wide takes out Casey and lands into the arms of the full-back Yoshitaka Yazaki. He gets ready to turn on the afterburners as the referee blows the whistle for a forward pass.

Very big let off for Ireland there. Not a good start for Andy Farrell’s side.

14 mins: Ireland 3-0 Japan

Baird loses the ball in the ruck. Japan counter brilliantly and Tomoki Osada uses his footwork to dance around the Ireland defence.

Ireland turn the ball over and kick it back. They launch another attack and Ireland are really struggling to hold them out. But they get the rub of the green again as another penalty is awarded.

16 mins: Ireland 3-0 Japan

Ireland have a scrum but the referee Gianluca Gnecchi is not happy and calls for a reset. This time, it’s good and Casey swings the ball out.

Play stopped for a lifting tackle by Japan’s Charlie Lawrence on Tom Farrell.

16 mins: Ireland 3-0 Japan

It’s not looking good for the Japan centre as it appears on the big screen that Farrell was lifted above the horizontal.

16 mins: Ireland 3-0 Japan

JAPAN YELLOW CARD!

Charlie Lawrence is heading for the bin as Ireland go for the corner.

18 mins: Ireland 3-0 Japan

And the lineout malfunctions once more. The trend continues for Ireland as Ronan Kelleher can’t hide his disappointment.

TRY! Ireland 10-0 Japan (Jack Crowley ’19)

21 mins: Ireland 10-0 Japan

That’s more like it!

Ireland go short with the lineout and push Japan back. Doris does brilliantly to find the gap and then provides the final pass to Crowley who strolls over the line and under the posts.

Yellow card update: Stays as yellow. Lawrence will be back on the field after his 10 minutes are up.

23 mins: Ireland 10-0 Japan

SO CLOSE!

Crowley attempts to link up with Jacob Stockdale via cross-kick. Stockdale gets a hand to it but he was well marshalled by Yazaki.

Tommy O’Brien then tries to advance on the far side but he’s gobbled up. Japan have the ball back and will look to build again.

28 mins: Ireland 10-0 Japan

Another error at lineout time followed by O’Brien being penalised for crossing. Japan then get another sniff at a try after Kenji Sato breaks out from a scrum. But the final pass goes into green hands. They’re really playing a risky game here. If that was a back, or if it was different opposition, Ireland would get punished for all these mistakes.

TRY! Ireland 17-0 Japan (Nick Timoney ’29)

30 mins: Ireland 17-0 Japan

Nick Timoney steps on the gas and drives for the corner! It’s a second try for Ireland and despite some of that sloppy play showing up again, Ireland are asserting their dominance on the board.

32 mins: Ireland 17-0 Japan

Japan threaten again as Epineri Uluiviti doesn’t get the pass off cleanly and it goes forward. They’re just lacking the final product.

35 mins: Ireland 17-0 Japan

Japan are back to their full compliment we should note. Lawrence’s time in the sinbin is over.

36 mins: Ireland 17-0 Japan

Japan are in the corner! And they have the penalty advantage. It’s only a matter of time you feel!

40 mins: Ireland 17-7 Japan

That was coming, and it’s no more than Japan deserve as Kobayashi pushes over from the maul. There’s a brief consultation but the try is good. Seungsin Lee converts.

TRY! Ireland 17-7 Japan (Kenji Sato ’37)

41 mins: Ireland 17-7 Japan

YELLOW CARD IRELAND

Disaster for Ireland as Jacob Stockdale heads to the bin for a high tackle on Kippei Ishida.

41 mins: Ireland 17-10 Japan

Japan reduce the gap as Lee slots the resultant penalty. Ireland really need to reset at the break.

Half-Time! Ireland 17-10 Japan

Ireland 17-10 Japan

Very mixed from Ireland so far. Two tries from Jack Crowley and Nick Timoney but they have also conceded try from Kenji Sato while out-half Seungsin Lee has been kicking well today.

The lineout is hurting Ireland again, and they will need a much bigger effort in the second half to get back on top again.

Second-Half: Ireland 17-10 Japan

41 mins: Ireland 17-10 Japan

Japan will start the second half with a lineout.

Yellow card update: Jacob Stockdale’s yellow card will stay a yellow card. Good news for Ireland.

41 mins: Ireland 17-10 Japan

They’re penalised for a knock-on in the air and Ireland will look to make a start to the second half from a set-piece.

42 mins: Ireland 17-10 Japan

And again, it’s another error for Ireland. Penalty to Japan.

44 mins: Ireland 17-10 Japan

Brilliant and sloppy from Ireland all in one go.

Some lovely crisp passing sees the ball flow across the line as Jamie Osborne links up with O’Brien. He gets held up, Ireland recycle the ball and James Ryan drops it at the vital moment in contact.

45 mins: Ireland 17-10 Japan

Japan secure the scrum and try to kick it forward. Osborne is under eat and sends it back with extras.

47 mins: Ireland 17-10 Japan

Ireland win a lineout but it’s not quite clean. Either way, Tadhg Beirne gets his hands on it and Ireland keep the ball.

TRY! Ireland 22-10 Japan (Andrew Porter ’47)

50 mins: Ireland 22-10 Japan

Porter gets Ireland’s third try of the day and Crowley misses the conversion. But Ireland are on the back foot when play resumes. Japan are closing in on their five-metre line.

Stockdale returns!

52 mins: Ireland 22-10 Japan

Ireland changes: Cian Prendergast comes in for Ryan. Sam Prendergast replaces Crowley and Jack Conan is in for Timoney.

52 mins: Ireland 22-10 Japan

Conan does well in the air to create an opening for O’Brien to nab the loose ball.

53 mins Ireland 22-10 Japan

Jacob Stockdale slides in for a try after a charge down on an attempted clearance but the TMO wants to review the sequence of play.

53 mins Ireland 22-10 Japan

NO TRY!

The score is immediately chalked off as Stockdale and Craig Casey were both offside at the moment of the charge down.

That’s a pity as Ireland are moving the ball a bit better and it would have been a brilliant reward for Stockdale after his sin-bin.

56 mins: Ireland 22-10 Japan

Ireland scrum and they get the ball out cleanly. They make a big burst forward and try number for could be on the way.

56 mins: Ireland 22-10 Japan

Stockdale slips the ball back to Conan as Ireland run at Japan. Sam Prendergast tries to put O’Brien through with a crossfield kick. But there’s just a bit too much on it and it knocks the ball forward.

Penalty advantage though, so Ireland kick for the corner.

57 mins: Ireland 22-10 Japan

Ireland changes: Gus McCarthy and Finlay Bealham are in. Kelleher and Tom Clarkson make way.

58 mins: Ireland 22-10 Japan

Ireland go on the heave in the corner but they get held up and the referee awards the scrum to Japan.

62 mins: Ireland 22-10 Japan

Ireland change: Craig Casey is replaced by Caolin Blade.

63 mins: Ireland 22-10 Japan

Super run from O’Brien after some patient passing. He tears right through to the corner and tries to release the final offload to Stockdale but it flies out into touch.

64 mins: Ireland 22-10 Japan

Ireland win their lineout but Osborne is beaten in the air. Japan counter quickly and Yazaki finds a gap to push Ireland back.

Ireland are lucky though as Japan drop the ball and Stockdale wheels away.

66 mins: Ireland 22-10 Japan

Ireland change: Osborne off and looks to be holding his arm in discomfort. Jimmy O’Brien comes in.

Ireland are in the corner, and are on the heave again.

TRY! Ireland 27-10 Japan (Gus McCarthy ’66)

70 mins: Ireland 27-10 Japan

Prendergast misses the conversion but that’s a great score from McCarthy and Ireland are really bossing the game now. Japan have been unfortunate at times and Ireland need to be wary of that with Australia and South Africa still waiting for them.

Ireland change: Paddy McCarthy comes in for Porter.

71 mins: Ireland 27-10 Japan

Ireland in the corner again. The lineout is good and they’re inches from the line.

TRY! Ireland 34-10 Japan (Paddy McCarthy ’71)

75 mins: Ireland 34-10 Japan

Stockdale takes off down the wing after a lovely pass out wide from Prendergast. He tries to pass it back inside as he’s being tackled. But his release is forward as the ball goes to ground.

Good passing from Ireland in the build up there to work the ball across the line.

TRY! Ireland 41-10 Japan (Tommy O’Brien ’75)

78 mins: Ireland 41-10 Japan

O’Brien, who has been excellent today, burns Japan to pieces with a brilliant run along the touchline and into the corner.

Prendergast made that score though with a quality behind the back pass. Ireland are really cruising to the line now.

Full-Time! Ireland 41-10 Japan

Ireland 41-10 Japan

Well, that’s that!

The job is done, the box is ticked, but that was patchy to be honest.

Jack Crowley, Nick Timoney, Andrew Porter, Gus McCarthy, Paddy McCarthy, Tommy O’Brien all went over for the tries while Crowley and Prendergast both had two conversions from three attempts.

Crucially, it’s a recovery win to get things back on track after that loss to the All Blacks. But bigger tests await against Australia and South Africa.

Ireland 41-10 Japan

Well, that’s all from us folks. Before you go, have a read of Murray Kinsella’s match report from the Aviva Stadium. And we’ll have more coverage for you throughout the rest of the evening.

Until next time, good luck!
