Jack Byrne has Oldham contract terminated before signing one-year deal with Kilmarnock

The 22-year-old former Man City midfielder endured a difficult 18 months at Oldham.

FORMER IRELAND U21 international and Manchester City midfielder Jack Byrne has had his contract mutually terminated with Oldham Athletic, paving the way for a move to Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock.

The player endured a difficult time while at Oldham, who he joined permanently following a successful loan spell last season.

Byrne has been frozen out of the club’s plans so far this season, and has not featured in any of the club’s match-day squads.

“Oldham Athletic and Jack Byrne have mutually agreed to terminate his contract,” the League Two club said on Friday.

“The 22-year-old attacking midfielder initially joined the club on loan in August 2017 before signing permanently in January 2018, making 44 appearances and scoring eight goals in all competitions.

“The club would like to wish Jack luck for the future.”

The 22-year-old signed for Manchester City from St Kevin’s Boys as a teenager, later joining Dutch side Cambuur and Blackburn Rovers on loan.

During his time at City, he worked under Patrick Vieira and featured in the Uefa Youth League before being sent on loan to Dutch side Cambuur, as well as Blackburn Rovers.

A short spell at Wigan Athletic followed before his time with his loan spell with League Two outfit Oldham was turned into a permanent transfer in January 2018.

The player’s difficult spell at the Latics has come to a close, however, with the player signing a one-year deal with Kilmarnock on deadline day.
