WILLY GNONTO AND Ao Tanaka scored quickfire second-half goals to help Leeds hit back for a comfortable 3-1 win at Derby in the third round of the FA Cup.

Gnonto and Tanaka struck in the space of four minutes to take the wind out of Derby’s sails after the home side had led at the break through Ben Brereton Diaz and James Justin added Leeds’ third in added time.

Joel Piroe’s first-half penalty was saved shortly before Derby took the lead against the run of play and the threat of an upset was short-lived as Leeds dominated the second half.

The two sides renewed a fierce rivalry that began in the 1960s and 70s when Don Revie and Brian Clough were respective managers and that was stoked by the infamous Spygate affair in 2019 when former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa sent scouts to spy on a Derby training camp before a Championship game.

Derby rode their luck but took full advantage by taking the lead  with Brereton Diaz planting a low finish into the bottom corner after the ball had fallen to him inside the box.

Piroe forced Zetterstrom into another save before the break and was instrumental 10 minutes after the restart when Leeds struck twice in four minutes to flip the game on its head again.

Jaka Bijol played the ball into the area and Piroe’s neat step-over allowed Gnonto to smash home a 55th-minute equaliser.

Piroe’s low goalbound shot soon after was parried by Zetterstrom and Tanaka nipped in to turn home the rebound to put Leeds 2-1 up in the 59th minute.

They will be joined in the fourth round by West Ham, who were almost held by QPR.

Taty Castellanos scored an extra-time winner as the Hammers edged past as 2-1 winners.

Richard Kone had earlier cancelled out Crysencio Summerville’s opener as Rangers briefly threatened a result which would have shocked even the most ardent Hoops fan.

It took 32 minutes for the hosts to have a shot, but when they did it was a decent one, Summerville’s angled effort tipped over the crossbar by Rangers keeper Joe Walsh.

Under-pressure boss Nuno Espirito Santo opted to dispense with the five-man defence he had started with and replace Mavropanos with his other new striker, Pablo Felipe.

And in the ninth minute of first-half stoppage time the Brazilian made an impact, smuggling the ball infield and playing in Soungoutou Magassa, who recycled it for Summerville to take a touch and lash in his first goal of the season.

However, in the 65th minute Rangers deservedly hauled themselves level when Kolli fed Karamoko Dembele.

Into extra time, and Soucek and Summerville were denied by Walsh before the winner arrived in the ninth minute of the first additional period.

Summerville did brilliantly to spin away from Dunne and cross for Castellanos to head powerfully past Walsh and spare West Ham from yet more misery.

Jovon Makama led the way with a hat-trick as Championship strugglers Norwich cruised into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a dominant 5-1 win over Walsall at Carrow Road.

The big striker made it 12 goals for the season while Matej Jurasek and Tony Springett netted their first goals for the club in a one-sided encounter, with the League Two visitors barely laying a glove on their opponents.

Canaries head coach Philippe Clement has claimed striker Josh Sargent refused to play in Sunday’s 5-1 FA Cup victory over Walsall – but insisted the United States international would not be leaving Carrow Road during the January transfer window.

“Josh sent me a message (on Saturday) evening saying he would not be available because of transfer things in his head,” said Clement, with the player having been linked with a move to Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC.

“This is obviously not something we want, and will have consequences. It is something we need to speak about inside the club, but the club has made it really clear to Josh and his agent that he will not be leaving during this transfer window.”

Ollie Bostock kept his cool to hammer home the winning penalty in a dramatic shoot-out win at Swansea to bring to an end West Brom’s run of 10 successive away defeats and see his side reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Having set up a goal for Jed Wallace at the start of the second period of extra time to give his side a 2-1 lead, he hit the target following three successive misses to make it 6-5 in the shoot-out after the teams had been locked at 2-2 after extra time.

Goalkeeper Dillon Phillips was the hero as Hull defeated Championship rivals Blackburn 4-3 on penalties to reach the FA Cup fourth round.

A drab goalless draw where clear-cut chances were few and far between over 120 minutes sent this tie to spot-kicks, and Phillips saved Rovers’ first two attempts from Yuki Ohashi and Moussa Baradji.

Hull captain Lewie Coyle was thwarted by Blackburn custodian Balazs Toth, but Kyle Joseph, Oli McBurnie, Charlie Hughes and David Akintola were all on target to get Hull into the next round.

Two goals from Louis Reed against his former club helped Mansfield to a shock 4-3 victory at Sheffield United in the FA Cup.

Lucas Akins and Rhys Oates also scored for the League One club while United’s goals came from Gus Hamer, Patrick Bamford and a Nathan Moriah-Welsh own goal.
