LIVERPOOL AND MANCHESTER City, two of Manchester United’s fierce football rivals, have today led the Premier League tributes on the 55th anniversary of the Munich Air disaster.

Twenty-three passengers, including eight of United’s famous “Busby Babes” squad, were killed when a plane returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade crashed on 6 February 1958.

Dubliner Liam “Billy” Whelan, aged 22, was one of the United players who lost his life.

On Facebook, Liverpool posted an image of Old Trafford’s Munich clock — stopped at 3.04pm, the time of the crash — with the message:

We all remember. We won’t forget. May their soul rest in peace, by the grace of God.

You’ll never walk alone.

Manchester City’s Facebook tribute read: “Today we stand together and remember City goalkeeper Frank Swift and all the victims of the 1958 Munich air disaster, never forgotten.”

Swift, who played for City from 1933 to 1949 and was working as a journalist for the News of the World at the time of the crash, died on his way to hospital.
