Many teams have tried to stop Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in the past, but the result is invariably the same, with the little Argentinian running rings around the opposition irrespective of how many markers are supposed to be stopping him.
Yet Benfica have a new prospective solution to curtail Messi’s excellence: witchcraft… No, we’re not joking.
At least, the front page of Portuguese paper Record is suggesting the team should adopt this innovative idea, as they bid for an unlikely victory in the Champions League tonight.
And who knows? A below-par performance from Messi and Barca may have the conspiracy theorists out in full force.
Then again, the Messi conspiracy is likely to prove fruitless, should that other much-publicised conspiracy theory involving Barca apply tonight – namely, that UEFA bribe referees to help the Spanish side to do well in the competition.
