When rabonas go bad: The NFL edition

There is a time and a place for rabonas, and an onside kick probably isn’t one of them.

IT IS EASY to be seduced by a rabona. When executed to perfection – like Erik Lamela’s attempt – it is one of the most beautiful things that you can see on a football pitch.

The key part of that is football, not American football. Last night the Miami Dolphins were down by three with almost no time left against the Denver Broncos so they went for an onside kick. Their kicker Caleb Sturgis then tried to be sneaky and flash at the same time.

It mightn’t look that bad of an effort at first glance but what you can’t see is that the ball dribbles harmlessly into the hands of an opposing player. Game over.

Sturgis should get style points for his rabona, but unfortunately, he got no actual points.
