HOOKER SEAN CRONIN was tonight named Leinster Rugby players’ player of the year.
The Limerick native played 20 times for his adopted province this season, scoring two tries in a personal campaign that was largely at odds with poor collective form from the eastern province.
Cronin was awarded the gong ahead of captain Jamie Heaslip, lock Devin Toner and Luke Fitzgerald who made a sustained comeback from injury this term.
Leinster’s other big silver lining from this season was also honoured with a prize at the Hilton. Young back row Jack Conan was named young player of the year after impressing in a breakthrough campaign that included two tries in 13 starts as well as an appearance for Ireland Wolfhounds before the Six Nations got under way.
“You forget how young Jack is and that it’s his first year out of the Academy,” said head coach Matt O’Connor.
“His maturity and his drive belies his 22 years.
“I suppose for Sean there is no greater honour than being recognised by your fellow players but knowing Sean he will already be looking at ways on improving and kicking on next season both for himself and for the group.”
The Australian added: “What they do away from the paddock, that people maybe don’t see, that has left a lasting impression on everyone within the environment.”
