Conor Cooney's goal not enough as Killimordaly shock champions St Thomas' in Galway

The 2013 All-Ireland champions were edged in an Athenry thriller.

St Thomas’ 2-15
Killimordaly 1-19

GALWAY SENIOR HURLING champions St Thomas’ will not defend their county crown this year after Killimordaly saw them off by the narrowest of margins at Kenny Park.

The Laragh-based club, county champions just the once back in 1986, won this afternoon’s preliminary quarter-final on a scoreline of 1-19 to 2-15 to reach the last eight for the first time in three years.

Killimordaly took a 0-5 to 0-3 lead in the opening 12 minutes before Galway inter-county star and All-Ireland winner Conor Cooney scored the first goal of the afternoon in Athenry. The easterners rallied, however, netting one of their own just after the 20-minute mark.

At half-time, the champions trailed 1-10 to 1-7.

Killimordaly extended their lead to four after the interval, but Thomas’ – a side which included All-Ireland-winning captain David Burke – pulled it back to within a point with five minutes gone in the second half.

The game continued to ebb and flow, but the underdogs managed to keep The Toms at arm’s length throughout, threatening to pull away once more on 50 minutes as they landed the third of three unanswered points to go up by four once more.

A last-gasp second goal from the 2013 All-Ireland club champions pulled them to within touching distance once more, but the resilient Killimordaly, who never trailed beyond the 24th minute, got over the line by a point when referee Leonard Fay blew his final whistle.
