14-man Vincent’s edge past Loman’s after epic week

The Dublin champions had two points to spare in Westmeath.

St Vincent’s (Dublin) 0-11
St Loman’s (Mullingar) 0-9

THOMAS QUINN SHOT seven points to edge Dublin champions St Vincent’s over the winning line at the end of a marathon week.

The former Dublin star led the line superbly at Cusack Park in today’s AIB Leinster club quarter-final in the absence of two current Dublin players.

All-Ireland winner Diarmuid Connolly was suspended from Wednesday night’s county final replay while Ger Brennan saw red after just eight minutes.

Referee Damian Brazil showed Sam Maguire hero Brennan a straight red card for an off the ball incident that left Kelvin Reilly floored.

It left Vincent’s down to 14 for three quarters of the game, their third match in a week and their fourth in 13 days.

But they battled bravely to lead by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time thanks to three converted frees by Quinn.

Westmeath ace John Heslin was the key Loman’s man and curled over two frees after the restart to level it up.

A point from Shane Dempsey then put the Westmeath champions ahead at 0-7 to 0-6.

They led again by 0-8 to 0-7 with 10 minutes remaining but were suckered by a strong Vincent’s finish.

Quinn converted two placed balls and then shot a beauty from the right wing to help them secure a two-point victory.

The results secures the 2007 Leinster champions and 2008 All-Ireland winners a semi-final clash with Meath’s Summerhill. But Tommy Conroy’s side will have to do it the hard way without two key players now.
