Round four of the group stages begins tonight as Arsenal welcome Marseille to North London and Chelsea travel to Belgium to take on Genk.

2. #ALL BLACKS Graham Henry has announced his decision to step down as New Zealand coach just nine days after leading the country to Rugby World Cup glory.

The New Zealand Rugby Union said this morning that they hope Henry will stay on as a mentor to some of the country’s promising provincial coaches.

3. #PREMIER LEAGUE A Demba Ba hat-trick helped Newcastle continue their unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a 3-1 win away to Stoke City last night.

Alan Pardew’s men have now jumped up to third in the Premier League and are just one point behind Manchester United.

4. #LONDON 2012 Linda Byrne booked her place at the London Olympics as she won the national women’s title at the Dublin City Marathon yesterday.

Byrne’s time of 2:36.21 was comfortably inside the A qualification standard for next summer’s games.

The women’s race was won by Nambia’s Helalia Johannes in 2:30.35 while Geoffrey Ndungu of Kenya set a new course record to win the men’s race in 2:08.33.

5. #BALLON D’OR A staggering eight Barcelona players have been named on a rather long shortlist for the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2011.

Lionel Messi, who won the inaugural award following its relaunch last year, heads the 23-man list while Wayne Rooney is the only English player to make the cut.

6. #MELBOURNE CUP French raider Dunaden won a thrilling Melbourne Cup last night, getting up on the line to pip Red Cadeaux in the tightest of photo finishes.
