Langtree Park: thanks for the memories. Anna Gowthorpe
what's in a name

'The Totally Wicked Stadium' is a strong contender for worst sponsorship deal ever

We had no plans to go to Langtree Park – and we certainly won’t be going now.

REMEMBER WHEN SPORTS grounds used to have names like Lansdowne Road and Ravenhill?

Good times. Happy, simpler times.

Stadium naming rights deals — and the money that comes with them — are now a necessary and unavoidable part of modern sport.

But we have to draw the line somewhere, and today’s announcement by English rugby league side St Helens is as good a place as any to start.

From the start of next season, their Langtree Park home will be known as the “Totally Wicked Stadium.”

The Super League club have signed a five-year deal with Totally Wicked who, in case you were wondering, produce e-cigarettes (see, they’re already getting value for their money!)

“The financial value of the sponsorship contract is the largest in the history of the Club and reflects both the quality of the stadium facility and the brand of St Helens,” the club said.
