HERE’S THE GOOD, the bad and unlikely football moves being talked about today
TOTTENHAM HAVE BEEN busy in the transfer market this morning — announcing the arrival of Dutch international Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar.
The 22-year-old scored 27 goals in the Eredivisie last season — which means he could either be the new Ruud van Nistelrooy or the new Alfonso Alves.
West Ham are in the market for a striker and they are due to meet with representatives of Colombian international Carlos Bacca, who could be on his way to London’s Olympic Stadium from AC Milan if his £26m (€30m) release clause is paid.
Meanwhile, Hammers co-owner David Sullivan has stuck a £100m (€118m) price tag on Dimitri Payet after a stunning debut season in England was followed up by a couple of decent performances at Euro 2016.
No one expects to see Juan Mata to be still at Manchester United at the start of the season as Jose Mourinho previously got rid of the Spaniard from Chelsea, plus new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan plays in a similar position.
Everton are keen on the 28-year-old attacking midfielder, but Villarreal have also thrown their hat into the ring, reportedly.
The huge wages on offer in China continue to entice players from Europe’s top leagues and Southampton striker Graziano Pelle is the latest marquee buy. Shandong Luneng have paid around £13m (€15m) for the Italian’s services, who will reportedly become the sixth-highest player in the world on £260,000 (€308,000) a-week.
The world has gone mad.
Oh, and Pelle is joined at his new club by Newcastle United centre forward Papiss Cisse.
In Spain, Real Madrid have been linked with Valencia’s 22-year-old Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes, but Los Che are believed to be holding out for an eye-watering €65m.
And the European champions are insisting that Alvaro Morata is not for sale after they activated a buyback clause to re-sign the striker from Juventus.
Retro Deal of the Day
15 years ago today, Manchester United broke the British transfer record by splashing out £28.1m on Argentine midfielder, who arrived with a huge reputation from Lazio.
A world class talent, he initially impressed with a goal against Celtic in Ryan Gigg’s testimonial but Veron really struggled to adapt to life at Old Trafford and was shipped off to Chelsea for £14m two years later after 82 games and 11 goals.
Here are those goals:
