Turf Club set to investigate claims that Davy Russell struck a horse
IRISH JOCKEY DAVY Russell could be hit with retrospective action in relation to an incident that took place before a race at Tramore on Friday night.
Russell appeared to punch his mount Kings Dolly in the head after the horse ground to a halt while approaching a pre-race ‘show’ hurdle. The Corkman was lifted out of the saddle but wasn’t unseated.
The incident was missed by raceday stewards but footage surfaced on social media yesterday after being broadcast by At The Races.
The Irish Turf Club is now set to examine the footage after chief executive Denis Egan told The Guardian via text message: “The stewards weren’t aware of it. Just brought to my attention 30 mins ago. Will be followed up.”
Waterford-based trainer Roger McGrath, who was also unaware of the incident, said Kings Dolly was showing “no ill effects” after finishing eighth in the 12-horse race.
A similar incident last month at Fairyhouse saw jockey Shane Foley handed a seven-day ban, which was reduced to five days on appeal.
