Ciarán Gallagher reports from Dusseldorf
TYSON FURY WAS humble in victory after claiming the heavyweight championship belt with a unanimous points win over Wladimir Klitschko at Dusseldorf’s Esprit Arena last night but a rematch between the pair is already on the cards.
Fury took the three belts on offer – WBA, IBF and WBO though the 39-year-old Ukrainian immediately hinted at another title bout.
Promoters confirmed that a rematch is contracted and likely to take place in the future.
A humble but disappointed Klitschko said:
Today was a good night but not a good night for me to win this fight. I couldn’t find the right distance to win this fight. Tyson was quick with his body shots and his head movement… This is to be continued.”
Meanwhile, Fury, who serenaded the crowd with a rendition of Aerosmith’s ‘I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing’, which he dedicated to his wife, reflected on his triumph.
“First of all I’d like to say congrats to Wlad and his team, he put up a really good fight, I found him quite awkward to land clean on,” said Fury afterwards.
He landed some great punches. God gave me the victory tonight so I hope to have many defences of this title. If I can be half as good a champion as Wladimir Klitschko I’ll be very happy.
“From the first moment I laced on a pair of boxing gloves, there wasn’t one person in my family who didn’t believe I wasn’t going to be the heavyweight champion of the world,” continued Fury.
“From the beginning I aimed for the stars and anything less was a failure. Tonight I hit a shooting star,” added the new champion.
