Cushendall edge Slaughtneil in extra time to lift Ulster hurling crown

The Antrim men just got over the line to claim a 10th Ulster title.

Cushendall (Antrim) 1-24

Slaughtneil (Derry) 3-17

DONAL MCNAUGHTON’S LATE point secured a 10th Ulster hurling title for Antrim’s Cushendall but they were made to fight all the way by Slaughtneil.

Neil McManus (0-13) had put Cushendall in control early on with five points, however back-to-back points from Chris McKaigue and the day’s first maximum from Brendan Rodgers put the Derry outfit two points up at the break, 1-7 to 0-8.

They had their second goal not long after the restart when Gareth O’Kane found the back of the net. Not to be outdone, Christy McNaughton scored Cushendall’s first goal of the game before Brian Cassidy hit Slaughtneil’s third.

The Derry men — who have played 13 championship games in the past 11 weeks — began to tire in extra-time and were eventually out-scored by five points to two in the second period to give Cushendall the win.

Elsewhere, Oulart the Ballagh beat St Martin’s by 2-15 to 0-13 in Wexford Park to claim their 12th county title.
