A SMALL PIECE of cricket history was made in Mumbai on Saturday as the third and final test between India and the West Indies finished in a scores-tied draw, only the second such instance in cricket history.
With India needing just six runs off their final two overs to win, they fell painfully short when Ravichandran Ashwin was run out when trying for the match-winning run on the final ball.
Ashwin’s dismissal meant that both teams finished the test on a two-innings total of 724 runs. The only other occasion on which a first class match finished in a scores-tied draw was in 1996 when England and Zimbabwe drew their test in Bulawayo.
Because India had one wicket remaining at the close of play, the test was declared a “scores-tied draw” rather than “a tie” — a drawn game in which runs, wickets and innings are all level. There have only ever been two tied international tests.
India won the series 2-0.
