'You're not wanted here!' Budweiser's Super Bowl ad is all about immigration

Beer giant says the timing of Adolphus Busch’s story is a coincidence.

IT’S SUPER BOWL weekend in America — and along with Lady Gaga’s half-time show and, eh, the actual game itself, you can expect to hear plenty of talk about this year’s crop of Super Bowl ads.

With spots costing an eye-watering $5 million for 30 seconds of airtime on Sunday, companies need to make sure that they’re getting bang for their buck.

And Budweiser, creators of some of the most iconic Super Bowl ads throughout the years, are already attracting plenty of attention.

Their minute-long ad dramatises the story of company co-founder Adolphus Busch, a classic tale of immigration and the American dream at a time when President Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban is dominating the news agenda.

Born in Germany, Busch travelled to America in the mid-19th century where he met Eberhard Anheuser and together they created Anheuser-Busch, the beginning of a multi-billion dollar drinks empire.

“You’re not wanted here,” “Go back home,” Busch is told by locals when he steps off the boat in America before making his way to St Louis, Missouri where he meets and shares a beer with Anheuser.

But the timing of the ad, and its close alignment with the current political landscape, is a coincidence, CNN reports.

“(It is) a story we believe will resonate with today’s entrepreneurial generation — those who will continue to strive for their dreams,” Budweiser’s vice president of marketing, Ricardo Marques, said in a statement.
