Shields returns to Cork senior side for Tipp clash as Munster U21 winners handed starts

Cork get their 2017 campaign underway tomorrow night.

CORK’S DEFENCE OF the McGrath Cup gets underway on Wednesday night, and manager Peadar Healy has opted for an experienced XV to take on Tipperary.

The Rebels recall Michael Shields, who was released from the panel after last year’s league, along with goalkeeper Ken O’Halloran.

The Cork management insisted at the time that a breach of discipline was not behind the departure. Shields starts at corner back tomorrow night while O’Halloran is named on the bench.

A bunch of players who won Munster U21 medals last season and contested the All-Ireland final against Mayo, are also included.

Stephen Cronin, Sean Powter and Peter Kelleher all saw game time in last year’s senior championship while full-back John Mullins and corner-forward Cian Dorgan are handed debuts.

Mullins was at the edge of the square for the Cork U21′s last year while Dorgan kicked the winning point in last year’s Munster U21 final.

Former UCC defender Conor Dorman starts at number 6 after an injury-hampered 2016, while talented duo Ian Maguire and Ruairi Deane pair up in midfield.

Tipperary lost by 14 points to what was effectively Kerry’s U21 side in their opening game of the competition.

The game starts at 7.30pm in Dr. Morris Park tomorrow night.
