More Fitzgibbon Cup drama as reports that Mary Immaculate are heading to the DRA

The third-level competition could be set for further chaos.

THE FITZGIBBON CUP could be thrown into disarray with reports suggesting that Mary Immaculate College are to take their case to the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA).

There was speculation earlier today that such a move was in the offing and it has now been reported by the Limerick Leader that Mary Immaculate have confirmed they will be appealing.

The decision could mean that tomorrow’s quarter-final ties – Limerick IT v IT Carlow and Waterford IT v Dublin IT – will be postponed and it also casts doubts over whether next weekend’s semi-finals and final will take place in Limerick.

Last Monday it was announced that IT Carlow had been thrown out of the third-level hurling competition after Mary Immaculate lodged an objection to the eligibility of defender James Gannon.

However last Thursday morning at 2am, it was revealed that the Central Appeals Committee had upheld IT Carlow’s appeal and the decision to award the fixture to Mary I by Comhairle Ardoideachais was overturned.

The latest twist creates a new headache for the third-level fixture makers.
