THERE WAS DISAPPOINTMENT from an Irish perspective at Ponds Forge in Sheffield today, as three players fell short in their bid for a place at the World Snooker Championship.

Having beaten Reanne Evans and Lee Walker in the first two rounds, Ken Doherty was comfortably defeated 10-3 by England’s Mark Davis in his final qualifier.

The 45-year-old 1997 champion was all but out, as he found himself 8-1 down overnight, and despite a manful effort today, he could not prevent the world number 18 from progressing.

There was disappointment too for Belfast native Joe Swail.

Despite leading 5-4 overnight, Swail ultimately lost out 10-5 to two-time finalist Matthew Stevens.

Clearly feeling the effects of his epic 10-9 win over Dominic Dale in round two, Swail ran out of steam today as the Welshman earned a relatively comfortable win.

43-year-old Dubliner Fergal O’Brien also exited the competition this evening.

O’Brien lost in heartbreaking fashion, as he was beaten 10-9 by Kurt Maflin amid a tense finish in tonight’s encounter.

The Irishman had gone into the day 6-3 ahead of his opponent.

Other big names to exit the World Championships at this year’s qualifying stage include Jimmy White, Steve Davis and Peter Ebdon.
