Tipperary hurling legend Liam Devaney dies at 82

The Borris-Ileigh man won five all-Ireland titles between 1958 and 1965.

FIVE TIME ALL-Ireland senior hurling championship winner Liam Devaney has died aged 82.

The Borris-Ileigh man won five titles between 1958 and 1965, and was known for his versatility around the pitch.

Indeed, he played every position except full-back in a career that spanned 13 years; even lining out as goalkeeper in 1963 when the man selected to play between the posts failed to turn up.

In addition to the five Liam MacCarthy cups, Devaney also won eight Munster senior hurling titles, eight National Hurling League titles and was named Hurler of the Year in 1961.

His last championship appearance came in the 1968 All-Ireland final which Tipperary lost to Wexford.

The Tipperary County Board announced his death, after a short illness, late last night.
