This female referee is set to make GAA history on Sunday

Maggie Farrelly will become the first woman to take charge of a men’s inter-county championship match.

CAVAN REFEREE MAGGIE Farrelly is set to write her name into the GAA history books this weekend.

Farrelly has been appointed to take charge of Sunday’s Ulster minor football championship clash between Fermanagh and Antrim — the first time that a female referee will preside over a men’s inter-county championship match.

It’s not the first time that she has made history. In 2014 she became the first woman to officiate at a men’s senior inter-county match in Croke Park, the football league meeting between Kerry and Dublin.

“It’s a great honour and something that you can only dream about,” she said at the time.

Farrelly first refereed men’s games at club level back in 2006 and has long been regarded as one of the top female officials in the GAA.

She has previously served as part of the officiating team in the McKenna Cup as well as the Allianz Football League and the Ulster minor football championship.
