Controversy

Conor McGregor is not a fan of the Reebok 'fight kit' according to Chael Sonnen

The former UFC star says the Irish fighter had to be reminded of his contractual obligations.

THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING the UFC’s deal with Reebok has already seen the departure of one high profile name from the organisation but it appears that Conor McGregor had to be reminded of his contractual obligations to the clothing company at UFC 189.

According to Chael Sonnen, McGregor had a disagreement with company officials behind the scenes prior to the UFC 189 weigh-ins, refusing to wear the official “fight kit” before taking to the scales.

Indeed, the former middleweight contender says the situation became so heated that an unnamed company representative had to show McGregor his contract to remind him of his obligations.

However, this didn’t stop McGregor, who has a solo sponsorship deal with Reebok, from proceeding to walk out on stage in his own Reebok-sponsored attire because, according to Sonnen, “different than the other guys.”

“Conor did not wear Reebok (at the Mendes weigh in). He wore something else and behind the scenes they were giving him his Reebok kit. He refused to wear it. They said, ‘Hey, you have to wear this.’ And McGregor said, ‘I’m different, I’m not like those other guys. I’m not wearing it.’

“So they get out the contract and everything and they tell him, ‘You have to do this,’ and Conor said ‘I’m not doing it.’ When the weigh-in rolled around he did not wear the Reebok stuff.”
