All-Ireland club hurling kingpins facing shock early exit from Limerick championship

Na Piarsaigh must win their three remaining group fixtures to make the quarter-finals.

AIB ALL-IRELAND club hurling champions Na Piarsaigh are facing a shock early exit from the Limerick championship.

On Saturday evening, Na Piarsaigh lost their second Group 1 game on the spin, going down by 1-19 to 2-18 against Doon.

It follows on from their opening day defeat to Kilmallock and leaves Na Piarsaigh with an uphill task to make the knockout stages.

Na Piarsaigh now need to beat Ballybrown, South Liberties and Bruree in their three remaining group fixtures to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Kilmallock, Doon and Ballybrown are all on maximum points from two games, with Na Piarsaigh, South Liberties and Bruree still without a point.

Tipperary’s 1991 All-Ireland winning captain Declan Carr masterminded Doon’s victory over Na Piarsaigh, as Barry Murphy and Darragh Stapleton scored their goals.

Na Piarsaigh were ahead early in the second half when Kevin Downes netted but Doon came from behind to claim a famous win.

Elsewhere, Kilmallock were 4-17 to 0-16 winners over South Liberties to continue their impressive form.

Oisin O’Reilly and Graeme Mulcahy bagged a brace of goals each for the winners.

Last Friday evening, Shane Kelly hit 2-3 for Ballybrown in their 4-25 to 2-9 victory over Bruree, with David Hall and Bryan Griffin also finding the net.

Elsewhere in Limerick over the weekend, Adare beat Ahane by 1-16 to 0-13 while last year’s beaten finalists Patrickswell hammered Bruff by 3-26 to 1-11 on Sunday evening.

Cian Lynch, Kevin O’Brien and Aaron Gillane claimed the Patrickswell goals while in Caherconlish, Murroe-Boher and Knockainey fought out a 0-18 to 1-15 draw.
