WATERFORD FOOTBALL HAS had a good few weeks. They won the McGrath Cup for the first time in 34 years recently and the goodwill from that victory spilled over to their opening Division 4 clash with Wicklow last night in Dungarvan.
Waterford are now the only team with a 100% record for competitive games in 2015 after defeats today for the other pre-season champions Tyrone and Dublin while Roscommon drew with Cavan.
They’re top of Division 4 after today’s action, along with Offaly who defeated London in Ruislip. Elsewhere there were draws in Belfast and Carrick-on-Shannon in the remaining Division 4 games today.
Waterford lead by 0-9 to 0-7 at the break last night with Shane Aherne kicking three first half points for the home side. The second half featured more of the same as Aherne kicked his fourth point as his side pulled away to record a 0-14 to 0-10 win.
Pat Flanagan’s Offaly got their football league campaign off to a winning start today with a dour 0-09 to 1-2 win over London at a chilly Ruislip.
After playing into the teeth of a strong gale, the Faithful county led the Exiles by the minimum at the break, a scarcely-believable 0-2 to 0-1 played in testing confitions.
Bernard Allen led the charge for Offaly in the second half kicking three frees while Pauric Sullivan and Ruairí Allen were also prominent.
Lorcan Mulvey converted a late penalty made it a grandstand finish but Offaly, after a winless league and championship in 2014, were not to be denied the two points.
It finished all square at 1-12 0-15 between Carlow and Antrim at St Paul’s GAC in Belfast and it was the same score between Leitrim and Longford today in Carrick-on-Shannon.
