Pro12 title-winning coach commits long-term future to Scarlets

Wayne Pivac is targeting further success with the Welsh club.

WAYNE PIVAC, THE Kiwi coach who guided Scarlets to a first Guinness Pro12 title last year, has committed his future to the Welsh region.

The news of Pivac’s long-term contract extension is a huge boost for Scarlets with the New Zealander’s new terms seeing him remain at the club until the end of the 2019/20 season.

Having initially arrived at Parc y Scarlets as forwards coach in 2014, Pivac soon took the reins following the departure of former Ireland international Simon Easterby and guided Scarlets to a sensational title win last season.

“I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m enjoying my time here,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the next few years and seeing the Scarlets continue to develop and grow and I’d like to thank the Board of Directors for their continued support.”

Pivac added that while Scarlets have emerged as a force in the Pro14 — their title defence has got off to a solid start, with five wins from six — he wants to improve their European credentials.

“We’ve done a lot of hard work to get the team to where we are and it’s a project that isn’t finished yet. We’re at stage one of a two stage process if you like. We’re now competitive in the Pro14, we knew it would take three years plus to be knocking on the door to win the championship.

“The next step is to be competitive in Europe on a regular basis. I think the last two weeks have shown that when we get our top side out there we are very competitive. We’ve had a few top class players unavailable. I think we’re not far off.

“I now want to help take the team to the next level by retaining the bulk of the current group of players we have and strengthening the squad where we need to and I want to see that process through.”
