LAST UPDATE | 14 Jun

ALEX DUNNE SECURED his fifth podium finish of the Formula 2 season today when he took third place, later upgraded to second, in the Barcelona Feature Race.

The Offaly man finished behind Rafael Camara and Nikola Tsolov, having started second on the grid.

He was later promoted to second place after Tsolov was given a post race penalty.

“Following the conclusion of the FIA Formula 2 Feature Race in Barcelona, Nikola Tsolov has been handed a post-race penalty,” F2 said in a statement.

“The Campos Racing driver was investigated after being alleged to have overtaken Car 9 of Gabriele Minì off the circuit.

“. . . As a result, they applied a lesser five-second time penalty for the offence.

“With the penalty applied, Tsolov is now classified P4 in the Feature Race results, with Alexander Dunne promoted to P2 and Minì in P3.”

The 20-year-old is fourth in the overall standings in just his second season in Formula 2.

Dunne made a superb start today, passing Camara at the first bend. Yet he was overtaken with seven laps to go, having made an earlier pit stop.

He was passed by Bulgaria’s Tsolov in the closing stages, but managed to hold off Gabiele Mini, his fellow Alpine junior driver, on the final lap to claim a fifth podium finish in five rounds.

Formula 2 standings:

1. Gabriele Mini (Italy) 86

2. Nikola Tsolov (Bulgaria) 80 points

3. Rafael Camara (Brazil) 69

4. Alex Dunne (Ireland) 67

5. Noel Leon (Mexico) 54
