Ireland 43-21 Scotland, Six Nations Triple Crown decider

Ireland meet Scotland for silverware, and a slight chance to win the championship overall, from 2:10pm.

Good afternoon!

Happy Super Saturday, everybody!

Welcome to The 42′s live coverage of Ireland’s Triple Crown decider against Scotland at the Aviva Stadium.

Gavan Casey with you here, and I’ll bring you a blow-by-blow account of today’s game — or as close as is possible — from 2:10pm.

There is silverware on the line for each side, and still the potential to win a championship — although today’s winner will require a favour from England in Paris tonight (8:10pm).

If the virtually unthinkable happens and France blow the championship, one of Ireland or Scotland will have to leave their team hotel and head back to the Lansdowne Road pitch for the trophy presentation.

The real trophy got banjaxed on a journey through Ireland recently, so there must be a replica in Paris and a replica in Dublin.

Sit back, everyone, and enjoy the day!

Ireland are unbeaten in the last nine years, and 11 meetings, against today’s opponents.

Still, it’s gotta happen for Scotland at some point, right? It’s not as if there’s an enormous gulf between the sides — most of those 11 games were tightly contested, including a narrow Irish victory at this ground which secured the Six Nations title two years ago.

Still, Ireland are between five- and seven-point favourites with the oddsmakers, this despite Scotland’s phenomenal 50-40 win over France last weekend.

It feels as though the closest thing to a guarantee is that this game is going to be fraught with tension. Can’t wait, personally!

Murray Kinsella and Ciarán Kennedy are in the stand with me, here. Murr’s on match-report duty, Ciarán will bring the colour. And the two lads will also have a quick post-match podcast for you, which I believe will be made available for free on YouTube, at some stage in the afternoon.

Lineups

No late changes to the sides named earlier this week — so far, anyway.

Ireland obviously have plenty of injuries in their own right, but Scottish locks Gregor Brown and Scott Cummings feel like big misses for the visitors today: Ireland will surely seek to slow them at the breakdown, where France opted not to engage last week and paid the price.

It feels like a big day for Tadhg Furlong against Pierre Schoeman. The Wexford man ran out of steam against replacement Welsh loosehead Nicky Smith last week, and was taken to the cleaners at scrum-time by Italy. That said, his general play against the Welsh was superb for 50 minutes. He’ll surely have a huge role to play today, both in the loose and at set-piece time.

Luke Pearce of England will be the man in the middle, by the way.

The teams are just about to emerge from the tunnel here, and then we’ll be onto the presidential pleasantries, and then the anthems.

Kick-off in about 10 minutes’ time.

Buzzing!

Not a political point: the presidential thing takes way, way too long.

Anthems done. Huge Scottish support here. Atmosphere has been super so far.

Strap in, ladies and gents. It’s go-time!

Kick-off

1′ — IRE 0-0 SCO: Jack Crowley gets the action underway in this Triple Crown decider!

2′ – IRE 0-0 SCO: First scrum of the game inside the Scottish 22′ — blue put-in — after Crowley spills forward in contact following a half-break.

And Tadhg Furlong folds Pierre Schoeman! Penalty Ireland!

They go to the corner. Big chance!

Try for Ireland! Ireland 7-0 Scotland

3′ – TRYYYYYYYY FOR IRELAND! IRELAND 7-0 SCOTLAND: JAMIE OSBORNE! WOW!

What a move! Off second phase from the lineout, Doris with the soft hands feeds Crowley, who arrows a pass to Osborne.

The fullback walks in under the sticks. Superb start by the hosts!

Crowley dinks over the afters.

Try for Scotland! Ireland 7-7 Scotland

7′ – TRYYYYY FOR SCOTLAND! IRELAND 7-7 SCOTLAND: DARCY GRAHAM! Oh my word, what a team try, and what a start to this game.

Incredible response by Scotland who piece together a multi-multi-multi-phase attack and just carve Ireland apart.

Graham finishes in the right-hand corner after some superb work by his forwards, and Russell converts!

Sides are level. Scotland are here for business!

10′ – IRE 7-7 SCOTLAND: Penalty Ireland between the Scottish 10′ and 22′ for not rolling away.

Crowley looks for everything — and some of the crowd groans thinking his line-kick has gone dead — but in fact he’s pinged it to the 5′. Irish lineout and another big chance — but first, some treatment for one of the Scots, who is now back up.

Try for Ireland! Ireland 14-7 Scotland

11′ – TRYYYYYYY FOR IRELAND! IRELAND 14-7 SCOTLAND: DAN SHEEHAN OFF THE MAUL!

Ireland roll it close and Sheehan spots the gap, diving over almost unopposed on the left-hand side! Three attacks in this game so far, three tries!

Crowley draws a beauty inside the left-hand post! Ireland back in the lead by seven.

13 – IRE 14-7 SCO: Scottish penalty on halfway for an infringement by Doris — and Russell drills it to within 10 metres of the Irish line.

Chance for Scotland once more!

17′ – IRE 14-7 SCO: Had some technical issues there but Ireland turned the Scots over in a tackle during that last opportunity in the Irish 22′! Crowley exited beautifully up to halfway and Joe McCarthy then initiated a choke tackle which gave Ireland possession in the Scottish half.

A break in play now as Ewan Ashman is treated for a head injury. Scotland will make a HIA switch.

18′ – IRE 14-7 SCO: Play will eventually restart with an Irish scrum just outside the Scottish 22′, in the 15′ on the left-hand side.

Try for Ireland! Ireland 19-7 Scotland

20′ – TRYYYYYYYYY FOR IRELAND! IRELAND 19-7 SCOTLAND: ROBERT BALOUCOUNE — WHAT A FINISH!

Off first phase, Ireland swing right and Stuart McCloskey pings a 30-yard skip pass out to Baloucoune, who finishes wonderfully down his flank.

He dots down in the corner at full stretch — what a try!

Crowley’s touchline conversion is narrowly wide, but he’s striking the ball a lot better today.

25′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Ireland piece together a nice attack but are eventually pinged for obstruction on the Scottish 22′.

Russell tries to find touch quickly but Dan Sheehan pumps the accelerator and keeps it infield! Incredible by the hooker.

27′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Rory Darge wins a penalty on the ground on Ireland’s 10′ — Russell finds touch on the 5′.

A massive opportunity for Scotland to reduce the arrears, here.

28′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Ireland sack the Scottish maul on impact and Tom O’Toole comes up with a huge jackal turnover! What a stop by the home pack!

30′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Beauty of a chip by Finn Russell into space in the Irish 22′. Tommy O’Brien, covering from the opposite wing, kind of just runs into the ball and boots it into touch accidentally — but it’s not a bad outcome as there were three Scottish chasers gaining on the ball!

Scottish lineout inside the Irish 22′.

31′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Tahdg Beirne gets over the ball and gets cleared out beyond the ruck! Penalty Ireland! Vintage Beirne.

Another excellent stop by the home side on D.

34′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Scotland are moving the ball in trademark fashion but Ireland are haring after them at every opportunity. The latest defensive effort forces a forward pass from one of the Scottish players (I missed who it was, sorry) out to Kyle Steyn — scrum Ireland between the Scottish 10′ and 22′.

They actually botch the resulting attack and Scotland fly-hack downfield, but Josh van der Flier recovers well and Ireland exit through Gibson-Park.

36′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Joe McCarthy blows up a Scottish lineout and they’re pinged for a deliberate knock-on as Ireland seek to peel away with the ball!

Crowley drills Ireland to touch inside the Scottish half.

Half-time: Ireland 19-7 Scotland

41′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: A brilliant half overall by Ireland, who are in control and have been the better side.

The Scots are still very much alive — their score through Darcy Graham was one of the best team scores you’ll see — but their big moments have been fewer and further between than Ireland’s.

Tries by Jamie Osborne, Dan Sheehan and Robert Baloucoune have the hosts in the driving seat. Catch you in 15 minutes or so!

Second half

41′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Finn Russell gets us restarted at Lansdowne Road. A massive 40 minutes ahead with a Triple Crown on the line.

42′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Ireland win a bobbling ball back from Scotland in the loose, just inside their own half.

A bit of kick tennis ensues and Ireland have a scrum on the Scottish 10′.

44′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Knock-on by Doris inside the Scottish half, McCloskey then concedes a penalty at the breakdown, and Scotland have a lineout just inside the Irish half.

They need to score next here, you’d have to think. And they’re well capable.

46′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: A sustained, excellent Scottish attack is ended by Tadhg Beirne! A huge turnover on the ground, and Ireland exit to touch up on halfway.

49′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Darcy Graham is starting to motor.

Penalty Scotland halfway between the Irish 10-metre line and 22′. Russell line-kicks them to just outside the 5′. Lineout, blue ball.

Chance!

51′ – IRE 19-7 SCO: Tadhg Beirne does it again but on Scottish advantage, so it’ll come back for their penalty deep inside the Irish 22′.

Beirne leaves as a blood sub, with Darragh Murray on temporarily.

Scotland will tap and go from eight metres.

Try for Scotland! Ireland 19-14 Scotland

53′ – TRYYYYY FOR SCOTLAND! IRELAND 19-14 SCOTLAND: FINN RUSSELL!

Ah, it was savage defence by Ireland but after what felt like dozens of phases, Russell squeezes over on the right-hand side!

Russell converts from near the right-hand touchline and the Scots are right back in this one!

Hold onto your seats, folks!

Try for Ireland! Ireland 26-14 Scotland

57′ – TRYYYYYY FOR IRELAND! IRELAND 26-14 SCOTLAND: DARRAGH MURRAY! WHAT A RESPONSE BY IRELAND!

An unbelievable team attack, similar to Scotland’s first try in its composition actually, and Murray eventually spots the gap from close range and dives over right of centre from the posts!

Crowley converts, and Ireland lead by 12 once again.

That’s the bonus point, also!

Try for Scotland! Ireland 26-21 Scotland

60′ – TRYYYYYY FOR SCOTLAND! IRELAND 26-21 SCOTLAND: BACK COME THE SCOTS ONCE AGAIN! RORY DARGE!

The back row finishes on the right as the Scots create a numerical advantage after another incisive, multi-layered attack!

What a score. What a game!

62′ – IRE 26-21 SCO: Superb restart by Crowley and Scotland drop it inside their own 22′. Ireland back on the attack!

63′ – IRE 26-21 SCO: Ireland adjudged to have knocked in an attacking ruck deep inside the Scottish 22′. Scotland looked offside as they went after Gibson-Park to be honest, but hey ho.

Scrum to the Scots well inside their own territory.

65′ – IRE 26-21 SCO: Farrell ringing the changes, including his full front row.

Bundee Aki also on for Garry Ringrose.

Try for Ireland! Ireland 33-21 Scotland

68′ – TRYYYYYYYY FOR IRELAND! IRELAND 33-21 SCOTLAND: TOMMY O’BRIEN! IT’S ANOTHER SENSATIONAL SCORE!

A couple of beautiful touches by Crowley — who later converts — and a big carry by Aki in the Scottish 22′. Ciarán Frawley then sends O’Brien through the gap and home!

It’s a huge score in this battle for the Triple Crown. What a game!

Ireland lead by 12!

71′ – IRE 33-21 SCO: Brilliant aerial take by Crowley just inside his own half and he’s taken out in the air by Kyle Steyn. Penalty Ireland.

Crowley walks it off but Frawley kicks Ireland to touch on the Scottish 22′.

Crowley has been really good — so much better than last week.

72′ – IRE 33-21 SCO: Penalty Ireland on the Scottish 22′! A chance to kill this if Crowley can continue his solid day from the tee!

Ireland 36-21 Scotland

74′ – IRE 36-21 SCO: That’ll do it! Ireland lead by three scores at the Aviva with just six and a half minutes to go!

77′ – IRE 36-21 SCO: A Scottish assault on the Irish line is ended by Nick Timoney and Tadhg Beirne! The Aviva Stadium erupts!

79′ – IRE 36-21 SCO: Fields of Athenry reverberating around the Aviva. Atmosphere has been really good today.

What a game, what an Irish performance. The Triple Crown is going to be theirs.

Try for Ireland! Ireland 43-21 Scotland

80′ – TRYYYYY FOR IRELAND! IRELAND 43-21 SCOTLAND: TOMMY O’BRIEN PUTS THE CHERRY ON TOP!

A ball bounces off Sione Tuipulotu’s head, O’Brien runs it in left, and Crowley converts from the touchline!

Full-time: Ireland 43-21 Scotland

FT — IRE 43-21 SCO: Crowley’s beautiful conversion is the last act of an absorbing, at times breathtaking game.

A memorable Irish performance seals the Triple Crown and a bonus point which keeps them in the hunt for the championship if France somehow manage to botch it against England later!

A brilliant team display. I think Caelan Doris has gotten man of the match, which would be deserved if so.
