#COYBIG: here’s the top 5 players of Ireland’s Euro 2012 qualfying campaign

We’ve highlighted five individuals who we reckon arguably did more to get us to Poland and Ukraine next summer than anyone else. Do you agree?

NO, WE STILL haven’t finished celebrating yet.

With Euro 2012 fever set to intensify over the coming months, here’s a look at the five players who arguably did the most to get us there…

5. Aiden McGeady

The Spartak Moscow man is often accused of being inconsistent, however along with Glenn Whelan, he was the only player to have been involved in all 12 of Ireland’s qualifiers. He proved a constant threat in the first leg against Estonia, contributing two assists, and Ireland were noticeably weakened by his absence for most of Tuesday’s match.

Best moment: His well-taken goal after two minutes against Macedonia in the Aviva Stadium helped Ireland narrowly avoid an embarrassing slip-up.

4. Sean St Ledger

The unsung hero of the Irish team, St Ledger may not have gained the plaudits of his defensive colleague Richard Dunne, however he invariably performed with equal aplomb, helping Ireland to maintain their solidity at the back, which has become a trademark of the team under Trapattoni.

Best moment: His performance away from home against Slovakia – not only did he perform flawlessly at the back, but he also chipped in with a goal, helping Ireland earn a hard-earned draw in the process.

3. Shay Given

(INPHO/Lorraine O’Sullivan)

Given may have appeared even higher on this list were it not for uncharacteristic errors in two of Ireland’s last three matches, which led to the concession of goals. Given may be 35 years old now, but he remains the only viable pick as first-choice goalkeeper. What would we do without him?

Best moment: His outstanding performance against Russia will be talked about for years to come.

2. Robbie Keane

It’s not surprising that Keane has been one of the most vocal backers of Trapattoni amid criticism of the Italian manager’s style. He – as much as anyone else – knows how it feels to be under-appreciated. Despite an unmatched goal record for Ireland, including an excellent seven goals in 11 matches in this campaign, certain supporters continue to call for the striker to be dropped.

Best moment: His highly effective performance in Estonia in the first leg was typical of the striker – quiet for much of the game, but still managed to score two goals and lay on an assist for Walters, as he ultimately proved to be the main difference between the two teams.

1. Richard Dunne

What else can be said about the Aston Villa defender? Without his series of heroic displays – particularly against Russia – it’s unlikely that Ireland would still be in the competition. Trap has the defender to thank more than anyone for helping the Italian to add another remarkable achievement to his CV.

Best moment: His performance against Russia already appears to have gained legendary status.
