Dublin cruise to 11-point win over Monaghan and they'll square off again in league semi-final

The teams met in Clones this afternoon.

Dublin 1-22
Monaghan 1-11

DUBLIN BLITZED MONAGHAN in Clones in today’s league encounter but the sides will renew acquaintances at the semi-final stage next weekend. Dublin needed a win to secure their place in the last four and they achieved that objective in some style to keep their hopes of a third successive Division 1 crown alive.

Monaghan, who made real progress this spring and entered the game on the back of an encouraging win over Kerry last Sunday, were left shell-shocked. It was their second heavy defeat to Dublin after last August’s All-Ireland quarter-final loss and they will seek to bounce back next weekend.

Dublin got off to a tremendous start when Brian Fenton, a late inclusion in the starting line-up, found the back of the net as they went in front by 1-2 to 0-0.  Monaghan, who largely relied on pointed frees from the likes of Rory Beggan, Paul Finlay and Conor McManus, fought back to trail by 1-4 to 0-4.

However Dublin accelerated clear once more to be in a commanding position as they lead 1-9 to 0-5 at the interval. Dublin’s control of the game didn’t waver after the interval and they went 1-18 to 0-6 clear at one juncture in the second-half.

The game petered out to its inevitable conclusion from there although there was some late solace for Monaghan when Darren Hughes scored a goal and they cut the margin to 11 points by the final whistle.
