MONAGHAN ARE SET to take on reigning champions Dublin in the All-Ireland senior football quarter-final next Saturday.
That’s the prize secured by Malachy O’Rourke’s side after their extra-time win in the rain in Croke Park tonight against Kildare in their Round 4B qualifier tie.
They will meet Jim Gavin’s team – the strong favorites to retain Sam Maguire this season – in Croke Park next Saturday evening at 6pm.
While the other quarter-final will be an all-Ulster affair between Armagh and provincial champions Donegal. That will take place in Croke Park at 4pm next Saturday.
Armagh reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2006 when they defeated Meath in this evening’s qualifier clash by 0-18 to 0-13.
Now they will hope to overturn the 2012 All-Ireland champions with a semi-final tie on August 31st at stake for the winners.
The wins for Monaghan and Armagh meant there was no need for a draw for the quarter-finals as Monaghan could not take on Donegal due to the fact that repeats of provincial final ties are not permitted at the last eight stage.
Tomorrow sees the opening two quarter-final clashes in the 2014 All-Ireland senior football championship with a Croke Park double-header seeing Kerry meet Galway at 2pm while Cork face Mayo at 4pm.
