AT 16 YEARS and 98 days old, Fabrice Olinga made history on the opening day of the 2012/2013 La Liga season.
The Cameroonian forward scored the only goal in Malaga’s 1-0 win away to Celta Vigo to eclipse Iker Munain as the youngest ever goalscorer in the Spanish top flight.
Munain was 16 years and 289 days old when he scored for Athletic Bilbao in October 2009.
Sent on as a second-half substitute, Olinga was unlucky not to set his record in style in the 84th minute. After a quick stepover to cut back inside the retreating defence, his curled shot from the edge of the box had Javi Varas beaten but bounced clear off the Celta keeper’s right post.
But when the ball was sent back into the box by Diego Buonanotte, Olinga was on hand to score with his knee from close range.
In the evening’s other games, Sevilla and Real Mallorca had 2-1 wins against Getafe and Real Mallorca.
Real Madrid open their title defence on Sunday evening (6pm) when they host Valencia while Barcelona begin at home to Real Sociedad (8pm).
