On that night, in the Ullevi stadium in Gothenburg, Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen defied wind and rain to overcome a Real Madrid team managed by the great Alfredo Di Stéfano and win the European Cup Winners Cup.
The Aberdeen team, made up entirely of Scottish players, emerged 2-1 winners after extra-time to lift the now defunct trophy.
That’s the type of challenge facing QPR when they take on Manchester City this weekend according to Fergie, who asked the assembled press at his news conference today if they knew “what happened 29 years ago today?
“I took a wee team, Aberdeen, to beat Real Madrid in a European final. 11 players, home-bred and the oldest player was 27 years of age.
“That’s QPR’s challenge, to do an Aberdeen.”
Ferguson went on to admit that the odds were stacked against QPR but “as long as human beings are human beings, you never know.”
