McDaid and Cummins hit the net as Galway defeat Roscommon to retain the FBD League

This was the third straight year these sides met in the decider.

Galway 2-14
Roscommon 0-15

John Fallon reports from Kiltoom

GALWAY CAPTURED THE FBD League title for the eighth time despite finishing with 13 men in an entertaining final at Kiltoom in Roscommon.

Their ability to get goals at key moments was decisive as Roscommon, who finished with 14, were unable to reverse the result of both last year’s FBD League and Connacht championship final results.

Galway led by 1-8 to 0-8 at the end of a lively opening half after Roscommon made the better start and led by 0-4 to 0-1 after 13 minutes thanks to efforts from Donie Smith, Cian Connolly, Fintan Cregg and Ciarain Murtagh.

But reigning champions Galway settled with Johnny Heaney, a late call-up for Sean Kelly, kicking two points from distance.

The key score of the opening half came after 19 minutes when a good passing movement involving Sean Armstrong and Paul Conroy was finished low to the net by newcomer Cillian McDaid for the Tribesmen to lead by 1-3 to 0-5.

Another newcomer Barry McHugh got his second point of the match and Tom Flynn also found the range to push Galway 1-5 to 0-5 in front 13 minutes from the interval.

The sides exchanged points three times before the interval to leave Galway leading by a goal when they turned around.

Donie Smith and McDaid exchanged points after the restart before a good run by Tom Flynn ended with Danny Cummins firing home a goal from close range to lead by 2-9 to 0-9 after 43 minutes.

But Donie Smith inspired a Roscommon revival, kicking three points in a row including an audacious effort from the left touchline to cut the gap to a goal going into the final quarter.

McHugh hit back for Galway and then it took a great save by Galway goalkeeper Ruairi Lavelle to deny Niall Daly.

By then Galway were down to 14 men after defender Declan Kyne picked up a second yellow card after 56 minutes, while in the dying moments Danny Cummins was also dismissed when he got a black card after being booked previously.

Roscommon finished with 14 after Enda Smith was black-carded in the closing stages and Galway closed out the win with a string of late scores to retain their FBD League crown.
