Garry Cook resigns following email scandal

The controversial chief executive departs having spent the past three years with the club.

MAN CITY’S CHIEF executive Garry Cook has had his offer to resign accepted by the club in the wake of a controversial email that was sent from his account.

In a statement released to the club’s official website, Cook admitted he had made an “error of judgement”, after an email was sent from his account to Nedum Onuoha’s cancer-stricken mother, Anthonia, which appeared to mock her.

City officials were reportedly furious with Cook, in what was the latest in a series of misdemeanours relating to the chief executive.

Following the announcement, Cook told the City website:

“I am privileged to have held my position at Manchester City Football Club and to have experienced the opportunities that it has presented.  The privilege is in part offset however by the significant personal focus which has at times, detracted from the magnificent achievements of those working at the football club.”

Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak also praised Cook for the “remarkable contribution” he has made and added:

“On behalf of Sheikh Mansour and the Board, I would like to thank him for his energy and tireless commitment to serving all those connected with the football club.  He will always be welcome at Manchester City.”

Cook had held the position since 2008, having previously worked for Nike for 12 years.
