Heyneke Meyer walks away from Springboks job

Meyer guided South Africa to third in the World Cup, but was subjected to constant criticism about his side’s style of play.

HEAD COACH HEYNEKE Meyer has decided not to seek a renewal of his contract after three years in charge of South Africa’s national rugby team.

Supersport.com this morning reported that the former Blue Bulls and Leicester Tigers boss would announce the decision today with his contract expiring on 31 December.

The South African Rugby Union subsequently tweeted their own confirmation:

The Springboks came within two points of eventual champions New Zealand in the semi-final of the Rugby World Cup and went on to finish third in the tournament.

However, Meyer’s tenure was fraught with criticism about his style of play; never more so than the week that followed the embarrassing defeat to Japan on the opening weekend of the World Cup.

“Meyer decided to stand aside as coach,” read a tweet from the official Springboks account, “a decision he considers to be in the best interest of SA rugby, following recent developments.”
