Irish Eye: Quinn's worth a derby draw for Blades

It was a quiet weekend for the boys in green in England’s top divisions, but there were plenty of goals in the lower leagues. Here’s the weekly round-up.

Premier League

Jon Walters & Rory Delap (Stoke City 2-0 Fulham) Irish eyes were smiling in the Brittania on Saturday as Walters and Delap struck within the last 10 minutes to give Stoke all three points. With the game winding towards a scoreless draw, Walters was on hand to turn home Matthew Etherington’s deflected drive before Delap wrapped up the points with a header three minutes from time.

Npower League One

Alan Lee (Exeter City 0-4 Huddersfield Town) Lee opened the scoring in the eighth minute, capping a flowing team move by applying a neat finish to Jack Hunt’s low cross.

Ben Burgess & Alan Judge (Chesterfield 1-3 Notts County) Irish U21 Ben Burgess helped Notts County climb to third in League One on Saturday. The Londoner headed home the opener on 21 minutes before turning provider seven minutes before the break, setting Dubliner Alan Judge free to roll the ball under the advancing Fleming in the Chesterfield goal.

Clinton Morrison (MK Dons 2-2 Bournemouth) On-loan Clinton Morrison ensured a share of the spoils for the MK Dons, volleying home from close range 10 minutes from time.

Stephen Quinn (Sheffield United 2-2 Sheffield Wednesday) Quinn’s opportunistic finish gave United an 11th-minute lead in yesterday’s Sheffield derby. The midfielder pounced to fire the Blades in front after Ched Evans’s shot had been turned onto the post.

Scottish Premier League

Anthony Stokes (Kilmarnock 3-3 Celtic) Celtic were in dire straits at Rugby Park on Saturday, Dubliner Paul Heffernan helping Killie to a 3-0 lead at the break before Stokes intervened late on to spark a revival. The striker scored two belters in the space of three minutes, following a beautifully-struck free with a 25-yard thunderbolt.

Darren Randolph (Hibernian 0-1 Motherwell) Once again, Randolph’s clean sheet helped Motherwell to a narrow win on the road. The Bray stopper kept his sixth league clean sheet of the season on Saturday, allowing Jamie Murphy to nick all three points with the game’s only goal.
