Ireland's James McGee beaten in Wimbledon qualifiers

The Irish number one was beaten in straight sets by Paul Capdeville of Chile this afternoon.

JAMES MCGEE’S DREAM of a Wimbledon debut came to an end this afternoon.

Ireland’s top tennis player was beaten in straight sets by Chile’s Paul Capdeville 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the men’s singles qualifiers.

It was McGee’s first appearance in a Grand Slam qualifier as he bid to emulate Conor Niland’s brilliant run into the main draw at SW19 two years ago.

But the Dubliner was always likely to find it tough against Capdeville who, at 148th, is 100 places higher than him in the world rankings.

It was McGee who struck first in Roehampton and broke serve to go 2-1 up in the opening set. Capdeville broke back immediately though and when he was able to force another break to go 5-3 up, he served out to take the first set.

An early break in the second gave Capdeville a stronghold on the match and he closed out a 6-4 win, setting up a second-round tie against Dzmitry Zhyrmont of Belarus.
