FENWAY SPORTS GROUP (FSG) could set Louis van Gaal the task of overseeing Liverpool’s regeneration project as the Merseyside club’s first sporting director.
The Guardian reports that the Dutch coach, who won the league and Champions League double with Ajax as well as league titles with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, is a leading contender to fill the newly-created role at Anfield.
The move to revamp Liverpool’s management structure comes following the dismissal of Damien Comolli as director of football in April and manager Kenny Dalglish’s sacking last week.
Van Gaal was linked with the club following Comolli’s dismissal but, in a new role as sporting director, would be responsible for implementing a coherent playing philosophy and structure throughout the club.
The 60-year-old has been out of club management since April 2011 when he was sacked by Bayern Munich.
FSG are simultaneously conducting interviews to appoint Dalglish’s replacement as manager with current Wigan boss Roberto Martinez expected to fly out to Boston this week to meet principal owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner.
Former Porto and Chelsea coach Andre Villas-Boas is still thought to be one of the other leading contenders for the Anfield hotseat.
