Tottenham 2-0 Blackburn (FT)

Hello, and welcome to our second Premier League liveblog of the day – and again, it’s an absolutely crucial game for both sides.

Here are your teams:

Tottenham: Friedel, Walker, Gallas, Kaboul, Rose, Lennon, Modric, Sandro, Bale, Van der Vaart, Adebayor. Subs: Cudicini, Saha, Giovani, Defoe, King, Livermore, Nelsen.

Blackburn: Robinson, Orr, Dann, Givet, Marcus Olsson, Formica, Dunn, Lowe, Pedersen, Hoilett, Yakubu. Subs: Kean, Martin Olsson, Modeste, Petrovic, Nzonzi, Rochina, Goodwillie.

And we’re underway…

Aaron Lennon has just made a miss of Ronnie Rosenthal-esque proportions.

Modric made a terrific surging run and crossed, but Lennon only found the side netting with an open goal at his mercy.

Tottenham have started impressively. Sandro has just made a surging run forward that was ultimately well dealt with by the Blackburn defence.

Sandro has just hit the underside of the bar with a thunderbolt of a shot from the edge of the box, as Tottenham continue to press.

Lennon makes a great forward run, but tellingly, he only has a badly positioned Van der Vaart to pick out in the box. Tottenham surely need to get more bodies forward in future if they want to score.

For the benefit of those who didn’t get my Ronnie Rosenthal reference (16.04):

GOAL FOR TOTTENHAM!

Lennon’s cross is headed by Bale to Van der Vaart, and the Dutchman smashes it over the line, despite the best efforts of the Blackburn defender to clear it.

Adebayor certainly looks like he’s up for it today, as he’s chasing down defenders tirelessly – not something that can be said of him every game, mind.

Tottenham have 71% possession so far, according to Sky Sports.

They also have 6 attempts, in comparison to Blackburn’s 0, which gives you an idea of their level of dominance.

The winger’s shooting has been characteristically poor today:

Tottenham, with their slick passing, coupled with the pace of Bale and Lennon, are almost unplayable at times. They’re given a performance that’s worthy of their excellent early season form.

Blackburn have rarely threatened, however as the cliché attests, they still have every chance while it’s 1-0.

Gallas has just hit the crossbar with a header on from a corner. Tottenham’s inability to take these chances may come back to haunt them, not for the first time this season.

Gary Neville reckons Wigan “could beat Barcelona at the moment”. I’m not so sure.

HALF TIME: TOTTENHAM 1-0 BLACKBURN

So at half-time, Tottenham appear very much in control. Some of their passing and movement has been scintillating at times.

However, with Spurs’ dodgy form recently, it would be foolish to write off Blackburn, despite their current lack of an attacking threat.

Here’s a look at that Tottenham goal:

We’re back underway…

Some people questioned whether Spurs could cope with the absence of Parker, but Sandro has been a more than adequate replacement so far.

When Blackburn have attempted to launch attacks, the Brazilian has invariably been on hand to break up the play.

Blackburn have at least managed to stem Tottenham’s relentless attacking for the time being, though they still don’t look like scoring themselves.

Lennon has consistently caused Blackburn problems, and he wins his side another corner.

It’s surely no coincidence that Tottenham’s loss of form coincided with the pacy winger getting injured.

There is audible frustration among the White Hart Lane faithful, as a Kaboul pass goes astray.

The longer this game stays 1-0, the more impatient they’ll become, and the more tense Harry Redknapp’s side will presumably feel.

Bale flashes a shot wide, as another Tottenham chance goes begging, following a typically swift counter-attack from the hosts.

Tottenham continue to threaten and dominate possession, without managing to carve out a clear-cut opening.

Blackburn have been very disciplined at the back, but they’ll need more ambition if they want to get anything out of this game.

Another tame shot from Bale, and for all their possession, Spurs seem to lack a cutting edge at the moment.

Meanwhile, worryingly for Harry Redknapp’s side, Lennon has been limping for about two minutes now.

Somewhat surprisingly, Yakubu has been replaced by Modeste.

Given that Blackburn are practically down if they lose this game, you’d assume Steve Kean would want his top scorer on the pitch for the duration of the game (unless he’s injured, which doesn’t seem to be the case).

GOAL FOR TOTTENHAM!

Kyle Walker curls an absolutely stunning free kick into the top corner from at least 35 yards out. ”

“Blackburn get what you they deserve,” says Sky’s Gary Neville, not exactly endearing himself to the club’s fans.

All of a sudden Tottenham seem well in contention for that fourth spot. Harry for England?

Blackburn, meanwhile, are staring relegation in the face, and are losing this game in the most lacklustre fashion imaginable, having failed to register a shot on goal in over 80 minutes of play.

Lennon has now gone off, presumably as a precautionary measure. He is replaced by the forgotten man of White Hart Lane – Giovani Dos Santos.

Sandro now goes off to well-deserved applause. Jake Livermore comes on in his stead.

Meanwhile, Kyle Walker has been named the man of the match.

And finally, Tottenham’s leading scorer, Jermain Defoe, comes on for Van der Vaart, as the game peters out.

FULL-TIME: TOTTENHAM 2-0 BLACKBURN

Incredibly, Blackburn failed to register an attempt on goal over the duration of the entire match, reflecting the sheer ineptitude (in an attacking sense at least) of their performance.

According to Sky, West Brom against Man City in 2004 was the last time a team failed to register a shot on target for the entire match.

Apparently, Van der Vaart said “no chance” when Walker initially asked if he could take the free kick. He adds that it was “a good team performance” from Tottenham.

So Tottenham are now fourth, ahead of Newcastle on goal difference, and only four points behind Arsenal with a game in hand.

Here’s a look at that Beckham-esque free kick from Walker:
