Niall O'Brien seals Leicestershire switch

The Ireland international moves to Grace Road after six seasons with Northamptonshire.

IRELAND CRICKET STAR Niall O’Brien has joined Leicestershire from Northamptonshire on a three-year contract.

O’Brien signed for Northants from Kent in 2006 and became a central figure over his six seasons with the county, winning Player of the Year in 2008.

But the Dubliner, who turns 31 next month, was unable to hold down a starting place this season and moves to Grace Road where he looks set to replace Will Jefferson at opening batsman. Jefferson, 32, announced his retirement in the summer following medical advice.

“I’m very excited to be joining Leicestershire and teaming up with quality young players like Josh Cobb and Nathan Buck and assisting these young impressive cricketers reach their potential and for Leicestershire to be competitive in all forms of the game,” O’Brien said.

I would like thank Northants and their supporters with whom I have a great relationship and would like to wish them the best for the upcoming season. All in all, I have plenty to offer and would like to contribute in a huge way at Grace Road.

In a statement Northants thanked O’Brien for his service at wicketkeeper and batsman. Head coach David Ripley said that his presence in the dressing room will be missed.

“It’s sad to see Niall leave the club as he has been a big part of the changing room since he arrived from Kent.

“He has found himself out of the side at times this season through form, fitness and international commitments, meaning the club couldn’t offer him the role he wants. He’s now found some personal security in Leicestershire’s offer of a three-year deal and we wish him well for his future.”
