Rooney won't play away from home against Valencia

The ankle injury picked up in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Bolton will rule the out-of-sorts striker… well, out.

WAYNE ROONEY cut a frustrated figure during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Bolton before limping off with an ankle injury – and will be even more frustrated to miss Wednesday’s Champions League group match in Valencia because of it.

Rooney had been expected to shake off the knock but will now join Ryan Giggs in remaining in Manchester; the latter was also taken off in the Sunday match with a hamstring problem.

The loss of both men is a significant one to United who desperately need a result from the match after a disappointing opening home draw against Rangers, while Valencia thrashed Turkish newcomers Bursaspor 4-0.

The Spaniards also sit atop La Liga after five games, ahead of the formidable duo of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Rooney has only scored once since the end of March – that from the penalty spot in United’s 3-0 league win against West Ham – and has been under personal strain since a Sunday newspaper published a story claiming he had slept with a prostitute while his wife was pregnant.

The striker had been so out of sorts that PA suggests United boss Alex Ferguson may have considered dropping him anyway, opting to have the in-form Dimitar Berbarov partnered by Michael Owen, who scored in Sunday’s draw.

It is not known how long Rooney may expect to spend on the sideline.
