Shefflin 'didn't want to do too much in one weekend'

The Kilkenny star didn’t feature for the Cats in a challenge match last night as expected.

HENRY SHEFFLIN’S RECOVERY is progressing as expected despite his decision to sit out last night’s challenge match against Offaly.

Shefflin missed Kilkenny’s entire league campaign with a serious shoulder injury but recently eased himself back to action with two club games for Ballyhale Shamrocks.

He was expected to make his senior comeback in the match to mark the official opening of Clara GAA’s new grounds, but after playing for Ballyhale against St Martin’s on Friday, chose to rest up instead.

“He played his club game Friday and I’d say the two games in one weekend was a bit much for him when he’s just coming back,” inter-county team-mate Jackie Tyrrell told TheScore.ie today.

He’s played two club games now so he’s slowly building it up. I’d say he just didn’t want to do too much in one weekend and risk hurting it again

He’s at a stage now where it’s all about contact and getting confidence in the shoulder. The two games in quick succession would just be too much and a bridge too far for him really so he just stayed out of it.

Tyrrell himself did not feature in the match which an experimental Kilkenny side won comfortably, 6-26 to 1-15. With the Cats not in championship action until the end of June, it was a useful exercise in keeping the squad on their toes.

“It was more experimental in trying lads out, a lot of young lads got game time,” Tyrrell added. “It’s just carrying on from the league really, trying out a few things. Brian was able to do that last night, give lads a run out and try a few different things.

“It’s useful, another stepping stone towards the championship.”
