O’Sullivan secured a 4-0 lead, before Stevens fought back, winning the next two frames.
O’Sullivan then won the seventh frame, before Stevens recovered to make it 5-3 following a break of 80 in the last game of the session.
In the day’s other semi-final, Ali Carter also leads 5-3 against Stephen Maguire.
Maguire established a 2-0 lead, but the 2008 finalist showed admirable resolve to win five of the next six frames in an error-ridden encounter.
