Europa League wrap: Pat's secure dramatic win, Sligo knocked out

There were mixed fortunes for the Airtricity League sides in Europe this evening.

A GOAL FROM Christy Fagan in extra time was enough for St Patrick’s Athletic to advance to the third round qualifiers of the Europa League, following a 3-2 aggregate win against Siroki Brijeg.

John Russell gave the hosts a half-time lead, before their opponents scored after the break, with a header from Ivica Dzidic.

Fagan then struck the winner in extra time, to make it 2-1 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.

They face Germany’s Hannover 96 in the next round.

Meanwhile, Sligo crashed out of the competition, following a 1-1 draw with Spartak Trnava at the Showgrounds.

Having lost 3-1 in the first leg, Peter Cvirik’s goal on 70 minutes all but ended the tie as a contest.

However, Sligo did at least get one goal back to level the tie on the night in second half injury time, with Jason McGuinness grabbing a late consolation.
