Noel McGrath wins Kilmacud 7s player of the tournament as Brendan Maher's club celebrate

IT WAS A Tipperary affair in this year’s One Direct Kilmacud Crokes Hurling Sevens yesterday with Brendan Maher’s Borris Ileigh getting the better of Noel McGrath’s Loughmore-Castleiney in the decider.

Maker’s club were winning their sixth title in what is the tournament’s 43rd year after they triumphed in the final by 10-7 to 5-12 while McGrath was handed the player of the tournament award.

Matt Stapleton was the inspirational captain on the day and lead Borris Ileigh to their sixth title with an exquisite display. Goals in the final from Conor Kenny, Brendan Maher and Dan McCormack were fundamental in the team’s success with goalkeeper Jack Burke exceptional throughout.

The beaten quarter finalists were Templederry Kenyons and Portroe of Tipperary, Beagh of Galway, and Dicksboro of Kilkenny, while Kilmacud Crokes of Dublin with intercounty star Ryan O’Dwyer and Eire Og of Clare, with Clare ace Shane O’Donnell falling short in the semi-finals.

The Shield Final, in which teams from counties with emerging hurling talent compete, was hotly contested by Setanta of Donegal V Keady of Armagh, with Keady coming out on top on a scoreline of 3.6 to 2.4.

The future of hurling was well represented by the U13 contingents from all over Ireland with the local side, Kilmacud Crokes claiming an victory over Maynooth on a scoreline of 4-8 to 0-0.
