Villas-Boas makes Di Matteo his first signing as Chelsea manager

EX-CHELSEA PLAYER Roberto Di Matteo has become the first person to join the Villas-Boas revolution at Chelsea as assistant manager, it was revealed earlier today.

Di Matteo, who is best remembered as a player at Chelsea for having scored the quickest goal in FA Cup final history, will join Chelsea following his sacking as West Brom manager last February, despite overseeing their return to the top flight in his first season at the club.

Di Matteo enjoyed an illustrious playing career at Chelsea, winning several trophies including the FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup.

There were rumours that the Portuguese manager initially intended to hire his Porto assistant boss, Vitor Pereira, to the role. However, any hope of this happening was quashed when Pereira became manager of Porto.

Villas-Boas will also employ former Porto coaches, José Mario Rocha and Daniel Sousa, to be fitness coach and chief opposition scout respectively.

The Portuguese manager said that he wanted Chelsea to play an attractive brand of football and that his new backroom staff consisted of “people who like the quality of the game”.

The manager has been installed at 11-4 by Betfair to repeat his success at Porto and guide Chelsea to the league title ahead of Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool, with Man United starting the season as favourites at 2-1.
