Derry denied first win as Tyrone snatch late draw in Ulster derby

Meanwhile, Down edged past Cavan in Division 2 at Kingspan Breffni Park.

Tyrone 0-11

Derry 1-08

AN INJURY-TIME score from Darren McCurry denied Derry their first win in the Allianz Football League Divison 1 as the Ulster rivals finished on level terms at a saturated Healy Park.

The referee held a pre-match inspection after incessant rain had left areas of standing water on the pitch but David Coldrick was satisfied with the conditions.

The visitors had manufactured a four point lead with just eight minutes left on the clock through Terence O’Brien’s goal but were unable to hold on after the dismissal of full-back Niall Holly for a second booking.

Tyrone held a narrow 0-04 to 0-03 half-time lead with Sean Cavanagh scoring two points in the horrendous conditions. But, the visitors fought back through scores from substitute James Kielt and Benny Heron with the wind and rain at their backs.

After O’Brien finished past Morgan, the sending-off of Holly proved crucial. Mattie Donnelly and PJ Lavery were on target before McCurry completed the comeback deep into stoppage-time.

Down 1-9

Cavan 0-8

Donal O’Hare the decisive goal as Down recorded their second win of the Division 2 campaign with a four point win over Cavan at Kingspan Breffni Park.

With nothing to separate the sides in heavy rain, O’Hare struck on the 63rd minute as Jim McCorry’s side bounced back from last week’s defeat to Roscommon.

Cavan went into the break with a three point lead but scores from Niall McDermott, Jason McLoughlin and Martin Dunne brought the visitors back into the contest.

The turning point of the game came on the hour mark when the hosts were reduced to 14 men as Ronan Flanagan was shown a red card.

Arthur McConville then provided the assist for O’Hare to fire home with a neat finish.
